What do Governors do ? A brief Guide for Parents

Governors don’t …

  • Get involved with the day to day management of the school – that    is the responsibility of the headteacher
  • Discuss individual complaints without going through the agreed procedures, all complaints must go to the headteacher initially
  • Put the needs of individuals above the wider needs of the whole    school
  • Act individually – decisions are made by the whole Governing Body

Governors do …..

  • Set strategic direction, policies and objectives
  • Approve the school budget
  • Review progress against the school’s budget and objectives
  • Appoint, challenge and support the headteacher
  • Ensure the school is meeting all its statutory responsibilities
  • Sometimes have a role in the appointment of new staff (definitely in the case of the Headteacher and the Deputy Head roles)
  • Attend two full Governing Body meetings per term and two committee meetings per term
  • Carry out the appraisal of the Headteacher with the advice of an external adviser
  • Act in the best interests of the whole school – even if this means making difficult decisions
